The Blue whale is the largest creature alive today on planet earth. This magnificent creature has been recorded as large as 150ft long. The image above shows the average size of a blue whale and how many humans it is long. The blue whale has acquired it's name because of its pigmentation underwater. Though on the surface the skin is more grey then blue, underwater, due to light refraction the skin take on the color of the ocean. This creatures skin is smooth to the touch. This allows the creature to swim through the water a relatively fast speeds and cut down on drag. The Blue whale has an average speed of 13 mph or 20 kph.
The blue whale eyes are the size of a tea cup, not something you would credit the largest animal on the planet with. However, just because the size of the animals eyes is small it is only because of the sheer size of the whale. Compared to other animals the eye is quiet large.
The blue whale also has two blow holes. These blow holes are what allow whales and similar creature to breath. The whale will surface or breach the water, blow out the old air and even water is has kept in its mouth (hence the name blow hole). The blow hole is considered the nose of the whale. It is the world largest and it is about the size of a human baby. Once the old air and water have been purged from the body the whale will take a huge breath and dive back down to an ocean depth of up to 1640 meters.
The blue whale is no only the largest animal on earth today, it is also the loudest. Though we can't hear them they communicate through a series of pulses, groans, and moans that are thought to be heard as far as a thousand miles away in good conditions. It is also believed by scientists that with there amazing powers of vocalization and excellent hearing they can sonar navigate through the oceans dark depths.
The blue whale, while it is the largest animal in earths known history, that does not mean it is a fat pig of a while. This whale is ironically, built for speed and maneuvering. With a top speed of about 20 to 45 kph this animal is also one of the fastest known animals in the ocean.
